Burning image’s exhibit success

Paul Wilson's photograph of burning heather

SUNLIGHT struggles through clouds of smoke rising from a bush fire in this image, captured by a Whitby photographer.

The snap features controlled burning of heather moorland in Commondale and has earned its photographer a spot in a prestigious exhibition.

Paul Wilson, who owns Victorian Images on Sandgate, submitted the photo for the Landscape Photographer of the Year exhibition at London’s National Theatre.

He narrowly missed out on winning the top £10,000 prize, but the photograph was highly commended, a result which Mr Wilson said was the “highlight of my career”. He added: “Although I’m disappointed I didn’t win, I go to the exhibition every year and it’s amazing that this time my picture will be in it.”

This is the first time a photograph taken by Mr Wilson has been chosen among the top 100 landscape images in the country. He explained how it came about: “I was just driving along when I saw the burning. The light was just right and I saw the opportunity to take a picture which, I think, shows the enormity of the burning.”
