A beer and a book at the Plough
Ben Stokoe, who has organised a community library at the Plough Inn, Sleights w120519
Punters at a pub in Sleights can now pick up a book with their beer.
Ben Stokoe, bookworm and bar manager at The Plough, noticed customers were bringing in books and swapping them with pals and came up with a money spinning idea for local charities.
An avid Harry Potter fan, Ben has converted part of the bar into a mini library which has a collection of about 30 different books.
Anyone can come and borrow a book at a cost of 50p and money raised will go towards local charities such as the RNLI, Ingham Park playground, Guide Dogs, Great North Air Ambulance, Saint Catherine’s Hospice and Scarborough Mountain Rescue.
Ben said: “People can donate to any of these charities, or suggest one of their own, as long as the money is going to a good cause.
“The Library bus doesn’t visit Sleights as often as it did before so I think people will find this really useful”
“People can come in for a pint or a coffee and browse the books and even read them in the pub if they like.”
He is asking people to bring their old books in so that the range of books is constantly updated and old books will be donated to charity shops to make space for new ones.
