East coast artwork showing in Whitby

VISITORS to Whitby's Tourist Information Centre can see an exhibition of Walter C Foster's (1887 to 1929) work from Monday.

Walter's career as an artist began at a very early age when, at 12 years old, he was employed as assistant to the art master at the Bingley School of Art.

Aged only 16, he managed to win a scholarship to the Royal College of Art.

While still a student there, he was teaching in the upper school of design and also teaching in the painting school.

He graduated with a full diploma and associateship in 1908.

Upon leaving the Royal College of Art he travelled extensively, along the Yorkshire coast, sketching, studying and painting his beloved Yorkshire for the rest of his days.

His bold use of colour and brilliant draughtmanship has a freshness that sets him apart from the somewhat more bland application of the era, earning him the status of the most highly acclaimed artist of his time.

From 1909, Walter regularly visited the east coast of Yorkshire, painting land and seascapes around Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby and Staithes.

He was one of the finest painters of his generation with a remarkable sense of colour and a keen and masterly eye for detail, capturing the coast in all its glory, giving an insight into the east coast as it was one hundred years ago.

The exhibition runs from 28 June to 11 July at Whitby Tourist Information Centre, on New Quay Road, Whitby.
