Comedian in Whitby fund-raiser

A FANTASTIC fund-raising weekend is on the cards with Friends of Whitby Pavilion, as one of Whitby's favourite summer entertainers, comedian Don Reid, makes a welcome return to the town.

And you can win a pair of tickets to see the show for free - see today's (Fri 23 July) Whitby Gazette.

Don, who entertained theatre-goers at the Pavilion over several summer seasons, has agreed to play a one-night stand for the Friends and will be presenting An Evening with Don Reid on Saturday 7 August at 7.30pm.

Don, who performed in traditional summer variety and also compered the popular Saturday evening Search for a Star talent shows staged at the Pavilion Theatre in the late 1990s, has since produced and directed many shows and cabarets.

He has written diverse material from drama to slapstick routines and has gathered many awards over the years, culminating in a plaque from the Variety Club of Great Britain to mark 35 years in show business.

Probably best-described as a traditional British comedian, Don said: "I can and do work an audience in whichever way they want me to, yet never work blue."

As part of this fund-raiser for the Friends, Don will include a look at his Heroes of Comedy.

Don's Taiwan-born wife, talented pianist You-Chiung Lin, will be in Whitby with him for the weekend and on Friday 6 August, also at 7.30pm, will be performing in the Northern Lights Suite.

You-Chiung, who has studied at the Royal Academy of Music and London College of Music and Media as well as in her native country, has performed successfully with orchestras all over the UK and as a soloist has given well-received concerts in Japan, Taiwan, Germany and Holland as well as Britain.

Her Whitby concert will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth along with old favourites such as Debussy's Clair de Lune and Liszt's Liebestraum – an evening guaranteed to appeal to all lovers of classical piano.

Tickets for each event are priced at 9 with a special Friends' discount price of 7.50.

To book call the Whitby Pavilion booking line on (01947) 604855.
