Artists open studio doors to public

THE Whitby area's artists are throwing open their doors to the public so they can get a glimpse of them creating their work.

The North Yorkshire Open Studios event takes place next week when local artists invite people to come and view their work in a studio setting.

Visitors will be able to see artwork in progress, find out how it's made and talk to the artists about ideas and processes.

They will also be able to enjoy a fascinating off the beaten track adventure, discovering hidden corners of this spectacular part of the country.

This year, Whitby's Tourist Information Visitor Centre in Langborne Road will be holding an exhibition of work by participating artists from the Whitby area.

The exhibition runs from Monday to 18 June and the visitor centre will be open every day from 9.30am to 6.30pm.

People will be able to collect brochures or maps there, showing suggested routes to the studios.

Those opening their studios to the public are Richard Pottas, Heather Gatt and Dave Jeffery in Whitby, Anne Thornhill and Paul Blackwell in Aislaby, Clothylde Vergnes in Egton Bridge, Alan Davis in Lythe, and John Egerton in Sneaton, plus many more from Robin Hood's Bay, to Commondale and Staithes.

Also taking part in the event will be Vivian Mousdell who will be creating a Sands of Time Art Installation at beach huts six, seven and eight on Whitby beach on Friday 11, Saturday 12, Sunday 13 June and Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June from 10.30am to 5.30pm.

Vivian draws direct inspiration from her surroundings and over five days with the help of friends and visitors, she will be repeatedly moulding shoes of sand that will be reclaimed by the sea.

From one of the beach huts, Slim Verhoef will document their advance and retreat with time lapse photography while inside another, visitors can uncover generations of holiday photographs and memorabilia buried and eroded by sand.

The studios are open on Friday 11, Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 June and Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June from 10.30am to 5.3pm.

Entry is free.
