Money not well spent

What on earth is North Yorkshire County Council doing pledging £300,000 to the private North Yorkshire Moors Railway?
This is a massive amount of our money to spend on any transport project.

Surely any available funds for rail should be directed towards improving the present poor Northern Rail service to and from Whitby, especially providing an early morning departure for commuters and an all year round service on Sundays.

And if public money is to be given to the NYMR, should there not at least be a requirement that in return, NYMR Whitby trains also serve Sleights and Ruswarp stations on the way, and with tickets at regular Northern prices rather than the inflated ‘steam’ fares?

So far, residents have benefited little from the much-publicised additional services to Whitby while some of the existing Northern trains are even more crowded.
