I always thought Big Brother was a major problem in this country but it seems Little Brother (in the shape of the Whitby’s Friends of the Earth) is trying to flex its muscles.

Like most, I am appalled by the amount of litter thrown away in our countryside and towns, and would be happy to see plastic bags phased out voluntarily, so long as reasonably cheap (and environmentally sound) alternatives were available.

But a ban?

Assuming the Friends are successful with this idea, what can I expect when I carry my shopping home in a (used) plastic bag?

To be pursued by a policeman, or, worse, a posse of Friends activists followed by a citizen’s arrest?

Or perhaps a spell in the stocks and social ostracisation?

Friends, you’ve got a worthy cause and a degree of public sympathy here – don’t jeopardise this by getting things out of proportion.
