THE first Whitby Gothic Weekend of the year has been hailed a fantastic success with thousands of flamboyant folk descending on the town.
Whitby was awash with leather, impressive outfits and costumes, big hair, dark clothes and even darker personalities which all helped to create a unique carnival atmosphere.

The traditional weekend attracts goths from across the globe, but is also enjoyed by tourists who come to marvel at the sights.

Whitby's pubs, shops and streets were packed with people enjoying the event.

Organiser Sam Hoyle said: "It is never as busy as the October weekend but this was the busiest April I can remember for a long time.

"Everything went smoothly and the locals and the goths all helped to create a welcoming atmosphere."

Whitby police said the weekend passed off peacefully and praised the organisers, licensees and council for their efforts.

Two sell-out gigs at the Pavilion were the highlights of the weekend with bands from Britain and the US putting in some stunning and chaotic performances.
