A PLAN to allow goths to gather in Flowergate over the Gothic Weekend has had to be shelved.
The Whitby Gazette understands that landlords in Flowergate and North Yorkshire County Council had been trying to get parking suspended in Flowergate for the event which begins on 25 April.

The landlords would then have paid for barriers to be ere
cted to keep the road clear.

The Whitby Gazette understands that a complaint by a resident in the area has scuppered the idea.

Rather than the whole of Flowergate being closed the plan was to suspend parking along Flowergate from the beginning of Skinner Street to outside of the Save the Children charity shop.

The plans could be resurrected for the Gothic Weekend in October.

Les Parker, improvement manager at County Highways said the proposed suspension of restrictions would not be going ahead.

He said: "I think it is worth pointing out that the whole of the road would not have been closed.

"As with any plan it had to go out to consultation with businesses and residents in the affected area as the suspension would have an effect on everyone.

"As I understand it there was a problem with the consultation and the practicality of getting it sorted in a short space of time."

He added that the cost of providing traffic management, possibly in the form of barriers, would have fallen on the pubs involved in the closure, the Little Angel and The Elsinore.

Little Angel landlord Tim Darrington, who was one of the pub chiefs trying to get the goths back into Flowergate.

"I'm disappointed it wasn't able to go ahead," he said.

"However, we will be trying to make sure that the plan will be in place for the event in August.

"The Goths bring a lot of trade and millions to the economy so we should be looking to work with them."

Another consideration would have been the issue of people drinking in the street, which is not allowed on the streets of the town.

The Whitby Designated Public Place Order gives police the powers to seize drinks off people who have them outside and even issue fixed penalty notices. This put an end to goths massing in Flowergate at last April's event.

Whitby Chief Inspector Dave Barf confirmed the suspension of the parking restrictions would not be going ahead but would not comment on the reasons behind it.

Jobsworth rules OK, so instead of a little give and take, once again the the jobsworth's rules must be obeyed.

Bureaucracy is ruining our towns and our lives, without the permission of these often unelected quango's you can do nothing without a their say so.

As for having a good time in a holiday resort, this is most strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated.

If these money spending wonderful Goths are to be restricted at ever event, do'nt be suprised if Whitby losses them to a more ameanable and flexible town.

I went to Whitby for the first time last weekend & was amazed by the wonderful people I dressed myself up to the nines in my formal Goth attire & prepared to enjoy some streetside beverages & chatting but I was surprised no Drinking allowed on the street & no pedestrianisation of the street. Maybe its because Ireland being a European country we tend to have a greater focus on al fresco dining & drinking, i couldnt believe the absence of outdoor seating & that the tiny beautiful streets were not off limits to traffic. I would like to propose that WGW come to Bram Stokers home city of Dublin!! Dublin is a heart a Victrian / Gerorgian town we have preserved our Victorian heritage better than any city we have the underground Medievil city, Grand buildings, & of course Bram Stokers house & trinity college where he studied, we also have temple bar a pedestrianised area with dozens upon dozens of pubs, tatoo artists, Goth shops, & small shops selling some obscure items. we also have a sea side Victorian town of Bray with its faded Victorian granduer, it has a huge hill to climb not for the un-fit! many old victorian hotels, many pubs, a direct light rail to the city for temple bar Goth shops, it has some beautiful scenery in the surrounding area of Wicklow (the garden of Ireland) there are abbeys galore in Ireland rugged coastline excellent hotels the standard in Ireland is pristine & cheaper than England. so why not come to the home country of the worlds 2 most famouse Gothic horror writers Bram Stoker & Mary Shelly (she who wrote Frankinstein) the Dublin Gay Theatre week is upon us soon come try us out who knows maybe we will all be here for October 2009 where you can party on the streets :-) pity about Whitby though as it is a beautiful town with wonderful people just not practical for late night entertainment, oh while in Dublin come see Christ Chruch Catherderal & St. Patricks Catherderal both Gothic St. Pats is the resting place of St. Valentine & another famous writ

I'd like to thank those who attended the weekend for the way in which they conducted themselves.

Once again there was no trouble and the party atmosphere which pervaded was a pleasure to work in.

Many thanks

With regards to the above story, I feel that a temporary road closure on Flowergate would be a wonderful idea and would only need apply from say 6pm until midnight and its only for 2 weekends per year. It would also add to the safety of the people in that street. Some of the cars that come through are just sightseeing the Goths anyway and sometimes trying to intimidate them. Drinks provided in plastic containers to drink in this enclosed area should then be no problem. I feel that this would add to the festival atmosphere.

I have to agree with Gothic Annie, Naas for the Punchestown Races week, allows people on the street with plastic containers to drink from we all have a fantastic time. Right on Gothic Annie!! Thanks also to the Inspector I noticed the presence of the police over the weekend they were lovely to us & it made myself & my daughter feel very safe in the light of the Sophie Lancaster murder. I would also like to thank the people of Whitby for their kindness & friendliness, we were made to feel very welcome. I hope you can resolve the closing off of Flowergate as I plan to return with my family in October & it would be lovely to be able to mingle al fresco :-)
