Tributes to motorcyclist killed in crash
THE wife of the biker killed last week in a four-vehicle accident on the A171 Whitby to Guisborough road has paid tribute to her husband.
Michael James Wheeler (44) of Staithes Lane, Staithes died on Thursday near scaling dam after colliding with another vehicle.
A Morrisons lorry and a Nissan Micra were also involved in the incident and the female driver of the Micra is currently on police bail while investigations are ongoing.
The week Mr Wheeler's wife Tracy gave this statement on the loss of her husband.
She said: "Mike was 44 years old. We have been married for nearly 19 years. He was my best friend and a fantastic father to Alannah, David and Melanie.
"He loved his job as a miner at Boulby, where he worked for 22 years.
"In his spare time Mike loved to ride his motorbike, which he has done for 30 years. He also enjoyed going to the Farmyard bike meeting for the last ten years with our son David.
"Mike was well-liked and loved in the village and it shows by the amount of love and support I've had."
He is the second bike to be killed on the stretch of road that links Whitby to Guisborough in a matter of weeks following the death of Graham Simpson from Brotton in July.
Mr Wheeler was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred around 7pm last Thursday.
A North Yorkshire police spokesman said that the Nissan Micra is believed to have been overtaking the lorry, heading north, and both the lorry and a Renault Clio, heading south, were forced to take evasive action.
The motorbike is thought to have collided with the Clio before hitting the Micra, which then overturned leaving one of its four occupants needing treatment.
The female driver and a male passenger from the Micra were arrested. The man was released without charge and the woman released on police bail.
The stretch of road where the accident took place was recently named one of the 32 most dangerous in the county which policed promised would be targeted to warn off unsafe drivers and decrease the number of fatal accidents.
