A WHITBY veteran of the D-Day landings has died at the age of 93.
Tom Wood, who worked for the Whitby Gazette all his life, passed away at Larpool Lane Residential Home yesterday morning.

He leaves three sons, Don, Roger and Keith, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.

Mr Wood retired from the Gazette in 1978. He was overseer in the printing room at that time.

He worked for the Gazette for 50 years, following in his father Alec's footsteps; he was also an overseer in the print room.

Mr Wood served with the Parachute Regiment during the Second World War, spending time in a prisoner of war camp after he was captured.

Mr Wood was vice-president of the Parachute Regimental Association Teesside Branch.

He was also president of the Whitby Conservative Club, of which he was secretary for more than 30 years. His wife Sally died in 2005.

If you have memories of Tom you want to share, or if you want to leave your own message of condolence you can do so by clicking here and going to his memorial book.

Stewart Perkins,

Whitby 25/01/2008 09:49:49
Very sad to hear of Toms death. I was glad to have met him and shared a beer in the Black Horse, when I was working on restoring The White Horse and Griffin for all those years. Tom gave me inspiration and hope through years of hard work, with all sorts of problems (planning, financial, labour, technical) I didn't know of his past but probably he drew on it to get through my problems as his family, friends and soldiers did through the dark war years. Many thanks Tom.

All the staff and residents at Larpool are saddened at Tom's passing. He was an absolute delight, a true gentleman in every respect. He was always willing to share his stories with visiting school children, who were in awe of his tales. We are all extremely priviledged to have know him. God Bless Tom.

It was sad to read of the passing of Tom Wood.

Whitby has lost a kind and decent man of rare quality and I am proud to have known him even though it is some forty years ago when we last spoke.

Sincere condolences to Don and the family.

We were both very saddened at the passing of our friend Tom, he brightened our day with his smile and twinkle in his eye, always ready for a bit of fun but a gentleman through and through. A pleasure to have known and cared for, if only for a short while.

Our deepest sympathy goes to Don and Lorna, Roger and Annette, Keith and Diane and families.
