Woman bishop for Whitby?

Councillors have said they will back a woman bishop for Whitby, if rules are changed to allow women to undertake the role.

At a full meeting of Whitby Town Council it debated a proposal by Whitby resident Pete Budd to consider a request for the Queen to create a diocese for Whitby, with the potential of a female bishop.

The discussion was held, despite a decision back in November by the Church of England general synod not to approve the appointment of women as bishops and that another vote on the controversial issue is unlikely to be held for at least the next five years.

Coun Susan Clough said: “It’s not our place to be telling the Church of England or any church how to proceed.”

Whitby mayor Coun John Freeman added: This decision is so far out of our hands it’s like a discussion around a dinner table almost.”

Councillors agreed to write a letter of support for a women bishop to the diocese, if the Church of England meet again to discuss it.
