So few have never had it so good

I ATTENDED the Tuesday Evening Forum at Whitby Coliseum, which was well supported by the public.

It was a really good turnout and refreshing to see locals showing an interest and concern for the town.

The panel was made up of the usual council executives etc who are so far removed from the realities and problems that this town faces.

How can people with huge salaries, big pensions and expenses comprehend life in Whitby for many on low wages, seasonal work or unemployment?

The questions to be asked by the public had to be handed in before the forum began, giving the panel the time to come up with plausible answers or spin using the usual words such as, “engaging”, “stake holders” etc.

This town is suffering badly with the recession but the lid has been kept on the truth – how many people are either out of work, working part-time and having to rely on top-up benefits to survive? Whitby has lost so many jobs in the last two decades – Burberry, milk dairy, Harts and shortly Europower.

All these jobs provided good wages which people could afford to buy houses or at least rent properties. Now even renting a flat is difficult in this town on the wage levels on offer, if you are lucky enough to be even working.

Don’t tell me the panel on Tuesday has any idea of reality, when things get bad they will have tickets for the lifeboat, not like everybody else on the Titanic.

This country is not out of the recession yet and when public sector cuts come after the election, it will be normal working people who will suffer as usual, not the likes of the panellists.

On a final note it has been announced that MPs are to get a 1.5% wage rise while all the low paid public sector workers will be expected to have a pay freeze.

To sum it all up “so few have never had it so good”.
