Revenue must go to roads and beaches

I'M delighted that eventually the council has accepted the pleas some of us have made over several years to charge for parking at Sandsend, with one proviso.

The considerable revenue must be used to repair the groynes so dilapidated that much of the beach is now shingle, and rock, and to provide the wardens who patrol the meters with the powers to prosecute dog owners who allow their pets to soil the beach.

The bye-law prohibiting dogs from the beach is generally ignored.

To those who oppose parking charges, remember that most of the affected car owners are from outside the Whitby district and many bring picnics, so local businesses receive little or no benefit.

As long as the revenue is used to improve the beach and local roads, rather than to add to an unproductive and already inflated council work force, bring on the meters.
