Reader sees familiar pub faces

THE photo of a Whitby pub landlords' trip to a brewery in Leeds, which featured in Looking Back, caught the eye of a Whitby Gazette reader living on the south coast.

Mr D de Tute of Bournemouth refers to a recent photograph in the Whitby Gazette – a copy of which was sent to him by his son in Whitby.

“I may be superfluous in my information, as I am sure that many local people were able to identify most of the landlords,” he said, “however, I recognise on third row far right Steve Hurdley of the Little Angel.

“Next to him is Jim Davis who later had the Station Hotel and front row, second from left, is George Thompson who was at the Wellington.

“George’s wife and her sister Peggy Ward were the daughters of a lovely lady, Mrs Lancaster of the Black Lion.

“Peggy was, of course, the landlady of the Buck in later years.

“The picture was, I think, taken in the 1950s.”
