Parking charge not needed
I strongly support Frank Townsend's letter objecting to the council proposal to charge for parking along Sandsend road.
A government spokeswoman said this week that “councils should never use parking charges as a tool to raise revenue” but that is exactly what they do.
They squander so much money (eg Staithes car park mud bath) that they are dependent on screwing every penny they can from already hard-pressed motorists.
People parking along the Sandsend road are not impeding anyone.
Families have easy and safe access to the beach, people who are not so fit can walk on the level and everyone can enjoy the wonderful views.
Moreover the businesses in Sandsend benefit from visitors having a few more pounds in their pockets which helps provide jobs; and considering the plight of Redcar due to the steelworks closing, it must be obvious that councils should be doing everything in their power to encourage tourism – our greatest economic asset.
The councillors who dreamed up this brainless idea should walk.
If they’d put their minds to improving the laughable attempts to stabilise the cliffs at the other side of the road they might have done some good.
But I suppose that all the money for schemes like that has vanished into the Brussels black hole or Icelandic banks.
