Villagers rally to clear huge snowfall
FOLLOWING one of the coldest winters in recent memory, the Whitby Gazette this week turns back the clock to 1947 when severe snow piled up in the town and Esk Valley.
Among the villages worst hit was Lealholm and the picture above shows efforts made to make it passable again.
On the lead horse are Jack Johnson, with William Hodgson and Arthur Lyth following.
Lacy Fletcher is pictured to the right of the horses while Mrs Briggs is outside the shop on the left.
At the back are a group of villagers including Mrs Fletcher, Tom Richardson, Joe Dale and Jim Readman.
Pictured below left are Eddie Rowe, Eric Fletcher and Arthur Lyth at Lealholm Rigg Top between Lealholm and Stonegate.
Pictured below trying to find a way through huge snowdrifts are Joe Bell, Alf Bean and Eddie Rowe.
DO you have any old photos of extreme snow or winter weather? Bring them into the Whitby Gazette offices at 17-18 Bridge Street or email sports editor Duncan Atkins at duncan.atkins@yrnltd.co.uk
