Fryup land first Flintoft final win
FRYUP Cricket Club's recent victory in the Henry Flintoft Cup brought back memories of a previous triumph more than half a century ago.
Some free scoring was seen in the 1958 final, in which Fryup took on Low Farndale at Castleton.
Fryup amassed a total of 155/8 from their 32 overs, with Wray (38) and Powell (38 not out) top-scoring.
Low Farndale were not in any way deterred.
Opener Sunley compiled a gallant 50 before being bowled by Powell, but their other batsmen struggled to make an impact with Fryup skipper K Macdonald taking three wickets for 38 runs.
The cup was presented to Mr Macdonald by the vicar of Danby, the Rev A Robinson, a playing member and vice-president of Castleton.
The competition was inaugurated in 1932 and Fryup had competed every season – but this year was the first time they had been successful.
Low Farndale completed an unwanted double as they were the beaten finalists the previous season.
