A short walk on ice to feed the hens

LAST Friday's picture of people skating on the frozen River Esk brought back memories for reader Eric Preston of Sleights.

He said the ice came in handy for signalman Alec Barker at Sleights, who kept hens down the line side. Instead of walking half a mile to feed the hens, all he had to do was cross the ice.

He recalled Kitty Hunton (right of photo) and her husband Edgar who lived at the boathouse, which her parents owned.

The ice finally cleared in spectacular fashion.

"When the ice melted it broke up into huge slabs and was a magnificent sight," Mr Preston added.

The photo was a nice surprise for Gazette reader Vera Dale, of Scarborough.

Mrs Dale, nee Bowes, is pictured on the left of this picture here with Mr Stevenson – the father of photographer Eric Stevenson who took this photo.
