VILLAGERS from the Esk Valley will soon be able to borrow books at a new library opening this month.

The library, which will be in the Parish Rooms at St Hedda’s School in Egton Bridge, will be officially opened on Wednesday 12 February at 3.15pm.

It is being set up thanks to a partnership between St Hedda’s, Egton and Glaisdale Primary Schools, the parish council and North Yorkshire County Council.

The move follows a call to communities to come forward after the withdrawal of the popular mobile library service which covered the villages surrounding Whitby, to make savings in the county council’s budget.

The new library will be run by a team of volunteers and will have a selection of books for both adults and children.

It will be open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3.15pm to 5.15pm for all members of the community.

County councillor Chris Metcalfe, executive member for library and community services said: “ I am delighted that we are able to work with such an enthusiastic team of local volunteers to make library books accessible to this rural community.”

At the library’s official opening, there will be a story teller and free pancakes as the official opening coincides with Shrove Tuesday.

There will also be colouring activities for children.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the library is asked to attend the opening between 3.15pm and 5.15pm.
