Local MP hits back

Following the recent letter published in the Whitby Gazette from James White expressing comments about me, I enclose a copy of the email (shown below) which we sent to Mr White on 3 April in response to his email to us on the subject of parking charges at the swimming pools.

May I also state it is not Conservative Party policy to stop pensioners’ concessionary travel.

Thank you very much indeed for your email on the subject of parking charges at the Scarborough swimming pool.

I have had a number of representations from both Scarborough and Whitby people in this regard, as a similar charge is being levied in Whitby.

I have written to the council voicing people’s concerns and hoping the council will take these into consideration.

As I am sure you know, decisions of this type are delegated to local government and I am not able to directly intervene on their decision making process.

I am sure you are aware that there are increasing pressures on local government funds, not least because of the under funding of the concessionary pensioners’ travel scheme which last year had a shortfall of 960,000.

This has put pressure on the council to raise money in other ways.

Thank you for your letter and I am sure the council will continue to keep this matter under review.

Robert Goodwill MP, House of Commons, London
