Heather burning is not a problem
Mrs A Davis of Easington (Letters Tuesday 5 May) claims that heather burning on the moors harms wildlife.
She need not worry.
The burning she complains of takes place, as she notes, in the autumn and early spring.
This is outside the bird nesting season.
The whole purpose of burning moorland on a rotation is to provide varied habitat for grouse, which only live and nest in heather.
This practice also benefits other birds.
The owners of these moors are hardly likely to spend time burning heather and consequently killing their nesting grouse are they?
And they certainly do not want grass which is of no benefit to grouse.
