Gulf in services more entrenched
I HAVE recently had the misfortune to be involved in two consecutive cases in the Whitby area relating to the provision of services to the elderly.
These were both family matters and do not require rehearsal in these pages – however it would seem (on the face of it) that there were similar gaps in the provision of services in both cases.
In particular a lack of communication between the statutory and voluntary services.
For instance, if the statutory services cannot provide bereavemant counselling when it is obviously needed, then why not refer to a voluntary service which can?
Similarly, if the statutory services cannot provide emotional support to someone with a terminal illness, then why not refer to a voluntary service which can?
Many years ago, when I worked in the voluntary sector in Whitby, we worked particulary hard to break down the divisions between the statutory and volunteer services.
Sadly (from cursory examination) these divisions seem to have become even more entrenched.
How very sad.
