Further thoughts on store projects
Thank you for printing the correspondence sent to you regarding the Sainsbury's project and the response from the councillors.
The letters of support were excellent and the response from the councillors was poor.
I, like the majority of the respondents to the flyer distributed via the Whitby Gazette asking our views on the project, rated yes as it will bring jobs to the area.
It will be on an existing industrial estate near other large stores, Homebase, will not detract from the beauty of our lovely town or cause traffic chaos.
I have not written to you before as my views have been expressed many times in a clear and articulate manner.
I have however written to Scarborough Borough Council and also my councillor, Sandra Turner, from whom I have not had the courtesy of a reply (I thought that’s what her expenses were for).
The new store will provide new jobs, hopefully cheaper petrol, and not be an eyesore.
I am totally opposed to the proposed Tesco store as it will be on a main approach to Whitby (eyesore) on agricultural land, cause even more traffic delay and disruption.
It is unnecessary as there are two stores, Spar and LiDL just around the corner and a petrol station.
I do shop and support the Whitby shops and businesses and tradesmen and will continue to do so when hopefully the Sainsbury’s store is built.

Having read most of the letters on the subject, and in speaking to friends and acquaintances, it would seem the majority vote should be for Sainsbury’s.
Indeed I tried to vote through your website, but you must have discontinued this facility.
I feel your poll cannot be a true local opinion, see below left.
Everyone I have spoken to both in Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby, prefer the Sainsbury’s option, because it is a better supermarket on the most suitable site.
People who live in the Stakesby area of Whitby are well catered for and definitely do not want another supermarket when they already have two in the area as well as the West Cliff shops.
A small development of affordable housing does not merit building a large Tesco on the doorstep, especially when there is a greater need and a better site on the other side of town for Sainsbury’s.

Has it finally come to this?
Tesco, that great arbiter of ‘good taste’, has blighted the landscape of our once green and pleasant land with monstrous grey carbuncles, surrounded by moats of equally grey car parks and encouraging us to pile our trolleys high with food that will later be tipped into landfill (Or tip us over the Government’s BMI threshold).
No, not my words but probably read by millions of readers of one of the most popular Sunday papers recently.
It surely reflects what is going to happen to the main entrance to Whitby?
Please won’t somebody use common sense?
What was the trading estate built for?
