Free Christmas parking
Shoppers will once again be able to park for free in the run-up to Christmas in both Whitby and Scarborough.
Scarborough Borough Council is suspending charges in its off-street car parks from 3pm during the full week leading up to Christmas from 17 to 24 December.
And it is also supporting late night Thursday shopping with no parking charges on 13 and 20 December after 3pm.
There will also be free all-day Sunday parking on 9, 16 and 23 December in both Whitby and Scarborough.
The incentives, intended to support residents and visitors to the town, as well as the retail community, were approved by Coun Penny Marsden, the council’s cabinet member with responsibility for HR, performance management and ICT.
Coun Marsden said: “In an economic climate which is seeing huge budgetary pressures put on this local authority as never before, I’m very pleased we’ve once again been able to introduce these parking incentives in the run-up to Christmas.
“We hope the initiative will continue to encourage people to come into our town centres and spend money in our high streets, supporting our traders as the country looks to recover from the worst double-dip recession in half a century.”
In Whitby, it applies to the off-street car parks in the town’s Church Street, Cliff Street, Marina Back, Marina Front and St Hilda’s Terrace.
In Scarborough, the council’s free parking offer applies to off-street car parks in Castle Road, Falconers Road, Friarsway, King Street, North Street, North Terrace, St Nicholas Parade, St Thomas Street, Victoria Road, Westwood and William Street.
