PANCAKES of all shapes and sizes were devoured across the Whitby area as people celebrated Pancake Day.

In Robin Hood’s Bay, the Grosvenor Hotel hosted a pancake afternoon which raised £400 for Robin Hood’s Bay cubs and beevers and a fund to pay for an extension at Fylingdales Primary School in the village.

Manager of the Grosvenor Sarah Lomas, Julie Sims, Olga Straw and Rachel Foster rustled up hundreds of pancakes in just three and a half hours.

A raffle and tombola boosted funds raised from the sale of pancakes. Donations also came from Whitby Co-op, Sainsbury’s and Phil Train who supplied eggs and lemons.

Sarah said: “We served around 100 people. We cooked constantly from 3pm to 6.30pm. Every year we say we are going to count them. I dread to think how many we made but it was well over 500.”

Youngsters from Sleights Primary School enjoyed five star treatment when they dined on pancakes at Raithwaite Hall.

Children aged four and five from class one enjoyed a tour of the Sandsend hotel’s kitchens, learnt about how pancakes are made and of course got to taste an array of pancakes with a variety of delicious toppings.

Class teacher Claire Morrison said the trip tied in with their project work on food from aroud the world. “We all had a brilliant time. We would like to thank everyone at Raithwaite Hall for inviting us.”
