Council’s concerns over Wetherspoon renovation plans

MEMBERS of Whitby Town Council’s planning committee expressed reservations about the proposed plans for the redevelopment of the New Angel Inn at their latest meeting on Tuesday.

Last week JD Wetherspoon submitted an application to Scarborough Borough Council which detailed its plans for the former pub, nightclub and hotel, which is in a conservation area but currently sits derelict.

The plans included replacing all the window frames with white uPVC, folding doors at ground level to open the bar up to the street and the presence of a new hotel entrance, smoking area and pavement cafe on Angel Yard.

SBC’s conservation officer Chris Hall has objected to the use of white uPVC windows across the entire hotel as it does not fit in with any other buildings within the conservation area.

Town council committee member Coun Amanda Smith said: “I think it’s important we back up the conservation officer on this one, it requires timber windows.”

Other issues she highlighted included the large amount of noise pollution that would be generated from the pub, adding: “We all know that it’s at the centre of an acoustic bowl.

“It’s something we should all be concerned about.”

Speaking during the public participation period at the beginning of the meeting, Bob Siggsworth of Siggy’s chip shop said he was concerned that bin and recycling arrangements were not included in the design plans.

“The plans are very misleading”, he said, adding that the proposed location of a smoking area near his shop means ventilation pipes would be sucking second hand cigarette smoke into his cafe.

However he said: “I feel it’s going to go ahead and if it’s done right it could actually help us.”

SBC Environmental Health Officer Daffyd Baker had no objections to the proposal on food or health and safety grounds.

Although SBC’s planning department will make the final decision on 18 August, the town council committee recommended that the application be refused based upon their concerns.

Committee chairman Phil Trumper will speak at the SBC planning meeting to express the town’s concerns and recommend a site meeting.
