THE new Customer First zone got up and running this week at the Tourist Information Centre, with council officers saying the closure of the Skinner Street office will save £20,000 a year.

With only 100 people a week visiting the Skinner Street offices, Scarborough Borough Council decided to dispose of the building as the authority attempts to plug a £2.6 million funding gap.

Mayfield ward councillor and portfolio holder for tourism and culture, David Chance, said: “Residents who currently use the Skinner Street offices are responding positively to the reorganisation - many people feel it will actually be easier to access services from more central locations. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing closer working relationships between Customer First and Tourist Information Centre staff and the modernisation of the tourist facility, which we’ll be bringing forward prior to the start of the main tourist season.”

While the Customer First service is now based at the Tourist Information Centre on Langborne Road, the Benefits and Housing Options service is being delivered by council staff from the JobCentre Plus premises on Bobbies Bank. The reorganisation follows the introduction of the Allpay payment scheme last year.
